AES Tietê’s commitment
to protect the environment surpasses the determinations foreseen
in
the concession contract. The Company has constantly invested in
improvements
to processes and
procedures for eliminating or minimizing the impact
of its operations on ecosystems as well as
carrying out environmental
education activities.
In 2005, AES Brasil Group prepared its Environmental Policy, undertaking
a proactive posture in
this area. From now on each company of the
Group is responsible for conducting the processes in
which it has
more expertise. It is up to AES Tietê to lead this restructuring
process due to its
expertise in the area, since it already has a considerable volume
of environmental assets.

The synergy of the Group’s companies
in 2005 permitted to improve the methodology that
identifies the
benefits obtained through reforestation of 8,800 hectares of vegetation
along the
borders of the reservoirs belonging to the Bariri, Barra
Bonita, Ibitinga, Promissão and Água Vermelha power
plants. This context has made it possible to glimpse the possibility
of
entering the international carbon credit market through proposal
of a qualified
reforestation project as a Clean Development Mechanism
(CDM) under the Kyoto Protocol.
The project foresees the removal
of 3 million equivalent tons of carbon monoxide (CO2 eq)
from the
atmosphere through the planting of about 16 million seedlings of
different
Atlantic Forest native species trees. AES Tietê developed
the structure and capacity to produce
1 million seedlings of 80 to
126 different species all these trees per year, which contributes
to the
preservation of the biological diversity of the flora. The
project is in line with the efforts of the
United Nations within
the context of the Global Climate Change Convention.
Another highlight has been the success of the fish farming system
that, in 2005, repopulated the
Company’s reservoirs with 2.5
million fish fries. This initiative contributed to the biological
diversity of the rivers’ fauna, which has been leading to a
resumption of fishing by number of
families who live along the borders
of the Tietê River, the most important river in the
state of
São Paulo. |

Furthermore, management
of environmental processes involves inspection of the perimeters
of the
reservoirs, of more than 5,000 km overall
length. In each one of our ten power plants, teams
conduct permanent
monitoring operations together with authorities who have power to
control
and run operations that ensure the environmental preservation
of
the respective areas, seeking to
avoid and mitigate eventual impacts
of any invasions, illegal fishing, irregular building,
deforestation
and environmental pollution. |
