Government of the São Paulo State and the Secretariat of Culture of São Paulo State, host the 23rd International ISPA Congress
For the first time, Brazil will host a congress of the International Society for the Performing Arts. ISPA's 23rd International Congress will occur in São Paulo from June 10-13, 2009
Approximately 250 professionals tied to the performing arts—theater, dance and music—from over 20 countries, will gather in São Paulo for an intense exchange of ideas and experiences, while innovative works and projects.
The Congress is comprised of roundtables, panel discussions, debates, and
exhibits by performing arts professionals, including directors of theaters and other cultural centers, artists’managers, directors, producers, authors, and artists, among others. In addition to promoting cultural exchange in the performing arts, ISPA also seeks to create relationships that can lead to new business opportunities around the world.
Graham Sheffield, artistic director at the Barbican Centre in London—the largest, and one of the most important, cultural centers in Europe—said the following of ISPA’s Congresses: “The opportunities for mutual exchange of ideas, problems and philosophies are too good to pass up”.
In addition to the Barbican Centre, ISPA’s 23rd International Congress in
São Paulo is expecting representatives from a variety of important international cultural institutions. Among them are the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Kennedy Center de Washington, the Amsterdam Concertgebow,Birmingham Royal Ballet, a New York Public Library for the Performing Arts de Nova York , and Singapore’s Esplanade Center.
The Congress will also receive Brazilian and Latin American participants who are involved in organizations dedicated to the performing arts.
The organizing committee, led by São Paulo State’s Secretariat of Culture with the participation of various renowned partners across Brazil’s cultural landscape, is committed to producing an outstanding and diversified schedule of panels, seminars and discussions. They will also include a series of parallel cultural activities, to showcase Brazil’s exuberant artistic production to congress attendees.

Past editions of the Congress
ISPA has been promoting the International Congress since 1986, in June.
Some cities that have hosted the event are: Singapore, Mexico City, Gateshead, Hong Kong, London, Amsterdam, Brussels, and Durban.
